Lubumbashi est l’ex-capitale de l’ancienne province du Katanga, dont les fabuleuses ressources en cuivre ont commencé à être exploitées dès la première moitié du XXe siècle, lors de la colonisation belge. Totalement exsangue après des années d’incurie gouvernementale sous le régime du dictateur Mobutu Sese Seko (1965-1997) et la deuxième guerre du Congo (1998-2003), l’industrie minière congolaise a progressivement remonté la pente à partir de la fin de ce conflit dévastateur. De 2010 à 2014, elle a tiré la forte croissance économique enregistrée par la RDC, jusqu’à hisser le Congo au rang de cinquième producteur mondial de cuivre et premier de cobalt, au prix d’une dégradation notable de l’environnement.

Lubumbashi is the former capital of the former province of Katanga, whose fabulous copper resources began to be exploited in the first half of the 20th century, during Belgian colonization. Totally exhausted after years of government negligence under the regime of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko (1965-1997) and the Second Congo War (1998-2003), the Congolese mining industry has gradually recovered from the end of this devastating conflict. From 2010 to 2014, it drove the strong economic growth recorded by the DRC, to the point of raising the Congo to the rank of fifth world producer of copper and first of cobalt, at the cost of notable environmental degradation.
