Les municipalités situées aux abords du Parc Indigène du Xingu sont le théâtre de l’expansion de l’agro-industrie et enregistrent des niveaux élevés de foyers d’incendie et de déforestation. Les actions timides du gouvernement du Mato Grosso et l’agenda anti-environnemental de l’ancienne administration Bolsonaro ont favorisé la dégradation de la forêt amazonienne dans l’État. La déforestation, l’exploitation forestière et l’élevage de bétail font également partie du quotidien local et contribuent aux récents niveaux élevés de destruction dans ces deux municipalités, tant en nombre de foyers d’incendie qu’en superficie de forêt détruite. Situées aux abords du Parc Indigène du Xingu, dans une région connue pour l’ouverture de « nouvelles zones » de déforestation, ces villes symbolisent l’escalade de la dégradation environnementale de l’Amazonie dans l’État et compromettent l’objectif du Mato Grosso, fixé en 2015, d’atteindre zéro déforestation illégale jusqu’à 2020.

The municipalities bordering the Xingu Indigenous Park are at the forefront of agribusiness expansion and have recorded high levels of fire outbreaks and deforestation. The weak actions of the Mato Grosso government and the anti-environmental agenda of the former Bolsonaro administration have encouraged the degradation of the Amazon rainforest in the state. Deforestation, logging, and cattle ranching are also part of daily life in the region and contribute to the recent high rates of destruction in these two municipalities, both in terms of fire hotspots and the area of forest cleared. Located on the outskirts of the Xingu Indigenous Park, in a region known for the opening of “new deforestation areas,” these towns symbolize the escalating environmental degradation of the Amazon in the state and hinder Mato Grosso’s commitment, made in 2015, to achieve zero illegal deforestation by 2020.
