En 2004, l’État du Sénégal avait accordé un permis de recherche à une société australo-chinoise dénomée Carnégi-Astron. L’autorisation d’exploration concernait presque tout le littoral casamançais de Niafarang au Cap-Skirring couvrant une superficie de 397 km2 le long d’un tronçon de 75 km de la côte Casamançaise. Les recherches ayant aboutit à la découverte d’un gisement de zircon, une partie de la population dit niet au projet à cause des menaces qui pèsent sur l’écosystème.

In 2004, the State of Senegal granted a research permit to an Australian-Chinese company called Carnégi-Astron. The exploration authorization concerned almost the entire Casamance coastline from Niafarang to Cap-Skirring covering an area of 397 km2 along a 75 km stretch of the Casamance coast. The research having led to the discovery of a zircon deposit, part of the population said no to the project because of the threats weighing on the ecosystem.
