D’après la Banque mondiale, le Cameroun possède le troisième plus grand potentiel hydroélectrique en Afrique subsaharienne, estimé à l’heure actuelle à plus de 20 000 MW en capacité d’équipement, avec le bassin versant de la rivière Sanaga fournissant près de la moitié du potentiel inexploité.La capacité de production d’énergie hydroélectrique actuellement installée au Cameroun s’élève à 723 MW, intégrant le barrage de Song Loulou (384 MW) et celui d’Edéa (267 MW) situés sur la Sanaga, ainsi que le Barrage de Lagdo (72 MW) situé sur la Bénoué.
Un troisième barrage (projet hydroélectrique de Nachtigal ,420 MW), est actuellement en construction sur la Sanaga, au nord de Yaoudé.

According to the World Bank, Cameroon has the third largest hydroelectric potential in sub-Saharan Africa, currently estimated at more than 20,000 MW in equipment capacity, with the Sanaga River watershed providing nearly the half of the unexploited potential.The hydroelectric energy production capacity currently installed in Cameroon amounts to 723 MW, integrating the Song Loulou dam (384 MW) and that of Edéa (267 MW) located on the Sanaga, as well as the Lagdo Dam (72 MW) located on the Bénoué.
