Assouan est connu pour ses barrages, le premier construit par les Britanniques en 1908, et le haut barrage inauguré par le président Sadate en 1971 créant un vaste réservoir en amont de la ville, le lac Nasser. À l’époque de Nasser s’est accompli le vieux rêve des pharaons : maîtriser le flot du dieu du Nil.
Sur le bief entre les deux barrages, l’île de Philæ, sur laquelle se trouvait un temple d’Isis, fut submergée lors de la construction du haut barrage, entraînant la reconstruction du temple par l’Unesco sur l’île d’Aguilkia, 300 m plus au nord.

Aswan is known for its dams, the first built by the British in 1908, and the high dam inaugurated by President Sadat in 1971 creating a vast reservoir upstream of the city, Lake Nasser. In the time of Nasser the old dream of the pharaohs was fulfilled: to control the flow of the god of the Nile.
On the reach between the two dams, the island of Philæ, on which there was a temple of Isis, was submerged during the construction of the high dam, leading to the reconstruction of the temple by Unesco on the island of Aguilkia , 300 m further north.
