Dans sa série « Water Life » (2018), la photographe éthiopienne Aida Muluneh (1974–) aborde la problématique de l’accès à l’eau, surtout par rapport à son impact sur les femmes. Muluneh constate d’avoir observé dans plusieurs régions rurales en Éthiopie que ce sont surtout les femmes qui se chargent d’aller chercher de l’eau à pied, tâche prenante et épuisante. Ainsi, Muluneh revendique la facilitation de l’accès à l’eau, non seulement comme aide à l’autosuffisance d’une communauté mais particulièrement comme soutien aux femmes. La photographe choisit comme arrière-plan Dallol, l’une des régions les plus chaudes et sèches du monde, pour mettre l’accent sur l’eau comme élément essentiel à la vie.

In her series “Water Life” (2018), Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh (1974–) addresses the issue of access to water, especially in relation to its impact on women. Muluneh notes from having observed in several rural regions in Ethiopia that it is mainly women who are responsible for fetching water on foot, a time-consuming and exhausting task. Thus, Muluneh calls for the facilitation of access to water, not only as an aid to the self-sufficiency of a community but particularly as support for women. The photographer chooses Dallol, one of the hottest and driest regions in the world, as a background to emphasize water as an essential element of life.
