Le père, un entrepreneur en connivence avec des militaires liés au gouvernement, a pour mission de négocier le bois de la région avec des groupes étrangers. Tandis que le pays sombre dans de sombres transactions, le garçon s’immerge de plus en plus dans la lecture d’un roman de science-fiction où, après la fin de notre planète, un groupe d’élus part pour une expédition spatiale. Réflexion troublante sur l’histoire du Brésil des soixante dernières années, Os substitutos mêle des thèmes écologiques d’une brûlante actualité, des personnages prêts à tout pour le pouvoir et l’argent, et surtout l’émouvante histoire d’un père et d’un fils.

During the Brazilian dictatorship, a father and his eleven-year-old son embark on a journey through the Amazon. Aboard a twin-engine plane, they fly over the forest. The father, a businessman in collusion with military figures tied to the government, is tasked with negotiating the region’s timber with foreign groups. While the country plunges into dark transactions, the boy becomes increasingly immersed in reading a science fiction novel in which, after the end of our planet, a group of chosen ones sets off on a space expedition. A troubling reflection on Brazil’s history of the last sixty years, Os substitutos blends burning ecological themes, characters willing to do anything for power and money, and, above all, the moving story of a father and a son.

[…] Era a primeira vez que o rapaz representava a madeireira da família, mas ao que tudo indicava ninguém se dera ao trabalho de lhe explicar o pragmatismo dos negócios familiares. Dois anos antes, o anfitrião brasileiro viajara para o Oregon para lhes oferecer madeira de lei a preço de banana. […]
Ia fazer quatro anos que, graças a contatos privilegiados em Brasília, o anfitrião comprara milhares de alqueires de floresta e cerrado na Amazônia Legal – ‘sete vezes o Liechtenstein, por uma ninharia!’, ele se gabava sempre que surgia a oportunidade. […] A única contrapartida (ou melhor, o único bônus) era que os contemplados com a pechincha ocupassem as terras em princípio devolutas, sendo que ocupar significava devastar enormes áreas de mata para plantar capim-colonião e criar gado, tudo fartamente financiado pelo Estado. E como não estava em seus planos perder nenhuma chance, viajara para os Estados Unidos para negociar de antemão a madeira do desmatamento.

Two years earlier, the Brazilian host had traveled to Oregon to offer them precious wood at a bargain price. […]
It had been almost four years since the host, thanks to privileged contacts in Brasília, had purchased thousands of acres of forest and savannah in the Amazon Legal region – ‘seven times the size of Liechtenstein, for peanuts!’ he boasted whenever he got the chance. […] The only requirement (or rather, the only bonus) was that those who benefited from the bargain had to occupy the supposedly vacant lands, and occupying meant clearing vast areas of forest to plant brachiaria grass and raise cattle, all generously funded by the State. And since he wasn’t about to miss any opportunity, he had traveled to the United States to negotiate the timber from the deforestation in advance.
