Originaire d’une région menacée par la déforestation, le chanteur et guitariste malgache Theo Rakotovao, natif du Masikoro (Sud-ouest de Madagascar) a fondé en 2003 le groupe MIKEA afin de véhiculer la culture musicale de ce peuple isolé vivant dans le sud de la Grande Île de l’océan Indien.
« Au-delà de l’intérêt musical, le groupe MIKEA et son leader ont attiré l’attention du public sur une région et un peuple dont la culture, profondément et intimement liée à la forêt, est actuellement menacée de disparition ». (Tsilavina Ralaindimby)
« Le titre de la chanson, « Ranobe », permet un jeu de mot.
1. Ranobe signifie littéralement : grande eau, beaucoup d’eau. Cela peut évoquer également l’inondation.
2. Ranobe est aussi et surtout le nom d’un village situé à soixante kilomètres de Toliara (ville chef-lieu de province du sud-ouest de Madagascar). Ce village devient le symbole de la destruction de l’environnement suite à l’implantation du projet d’extraction d’ilménite et de sables minéralisés. » (Victor Randrianary)

Originally from a region threatened by deforestation, the Malagasy singer and guitarist Theo Rakotovao, native of Masikoro (Southwest of Madagascar) founded the group MIKEA in 2003 in order to convey the musical culture of this isolated people living in the south of the Big Island in the Indian Ocean. « Beyond the musical interest, the MIKEA group and its leader have drawn the public’s attention to a region and a people whose culture, deeply and intimately linked to the forest, is currently threatened with disappearance. » (Tsilavina Ralainimby) “The title of the song, “Ranobe,” allows for a play on words. 1. Ranobe literally means: big water, lots of water. This can also evoke the flood. 2. Ranobe is also and above all the name of a village located sixty kilometers from Toliara (capital city of the province in the southwest of Madagascar). This village becomes the symbol of the destruction of the environment following the establishment of the ilmenite and mineral sands extraction project. » (Victor Randrianary)
