Memories of an Unborn Sun cherche à articuler une interrogation métaphysique autour de la lumière comme forme de mémoire, en mêlant des archives d’essais nucléaires français dans le Sahara, des images virales d’un soleil artificiel s’élevant dans le ciel et des vers du poète touareg Hawad. Alors que ce monde sans nuit incarne l’utopie capitaliste d’une croissance infinie, comment se souvenir de ceux qui sont devenus invisibles ?
« Sous la lumière verticale, engins, fermes solaires et silhouettes apparaissent, mirages fugaces, entre les concrétions rocheuses. Nous sommes près d’In Ekker (Sahara algérien), où les Français ont mené des essais nucléaires souterrains dans les années 1960. Les ouvriers de l’atome, évoqués par des archives officielles presque rétro-futuristes, ont fait place aux employés des entreprises de construction chinoises du 21e siècle, hébergés sur des bases-vies isolées. Si leurs témoignages anonymes sur la pénibilité du travail ancrent Memories of an Unborn Sun dans la réalité, Marcel Mrejen les fond dans une impressionnante dystopie visuelle, qui met en parallèle l’énergie atomique aux mains de l’ex-puissance coloniale et la mise sur orbite, imaginaire, d’un soleil artificiel lancé au cœur du désert par les Chinois. L’un d’eux, errant tel un spectre halluciné, nous transmet la mémoire de cet évènement à venir, promesse d’une croissance infinie, avant d’être englouti par un vent de sable, où retentit la voix d’un poète touareg imprécateur : « Combien de temps allons-nous exister, sans présent, tiraillés entre hier et demain ? » » (Emmanuel Chicon – Visions du Réel)

Documentary film written and directed by Marcel Mrejen. Algeria, France, Netherlands, 2024, 22 minutes. Memories of an Unborn Sun seeks to articulate a metaphysical questioning around light as a form of memory, by combining archives of French nuclear tests in the Sahara, viral images of an artificial sun rising in the sky and verses by the Tuareg poet Hawad. While this nightless world embodies the capitalist utopia of infinite growth, how can we remember those who have become invisible?
« Under the vertical light, machines, solar farms and silhouettes appear, fleeting mirages, between the rock concretions. We are near In Ekker (Algerian Sahara), where the French carried out underground nuclear tests in the 1960s.
